Welcome to the AI Usage License Project
The AI Usage License (AIUL) project provides a standardized framework for educational institutions to clearly communicate expectations around AI tool usage in academic assignments.
Our Mission
As AI tools become increasingly prevalent in education and creative fields, educators need clear ways to communicate their expectations for how and when students can use these tools in their coursework. Inspired by the Creative Commons project, the AIUL project creates a simple tagging system that can be applied to any assignment, making expectations transparent and consistent.
How It Works
Each AIUL tag indicates a specific level of permitted AI usage, from completely prohibited to fully integrated. Optional media-specific suffixes can be added to provide additional clarity for different types of assignments.
For Educators
Add clarity to your assignments with consistent AI usage guidelines. Reduce confusion and create fair assessment standards.

Transparently Document Your AI Usage
The AI Usage Declaration tool allows students and creators to document how they used AI tools in their work. Create a professional, standardized declaration that can be embedded in assignments, portfolios, or shared with instructors.
How It Works
- Select Your Tools: Choose the media domains (writing, images, audio, video, code, etc.) where you used AI
- Specify Usage Levels: Indicate how you used AI in each domain—from ideation and assistance to generation and refinement
- Document Your Process: Add notes about which specific tools you used and how they helped your creative process
- Share Your Declaration: Download the declaration as a graphic or embed the HTML code in your assignment, portfolio, or website
