The AI Usage License (AIUL) Project is a communication toolkit designed to help faculty and students establish clear expectations around AI usage in educational contexts. The AIUL tags and accompanying documentation are provided as educational resources only and have no legal binding status.
This project was developed at Penn State University by faculty in the Digital Multimedia Design and Digital Media Design programs and is made available as a resource for educators. Unlike Creative Commons licenses, AIUL is not a legal framework and is not intended to create enforceable contractual obligations.
Purpose and Limitations
AIUL is intended to:
- Facilitate clear communication between educators and students about AI tool usage expectations
- Provide a standardized vocabulary for discussing AI integration in coursework
- Support educators in designing appropriate policies for their specific pedagogical contexts
- Help students understand when and how they may use AI tools in their academic work
AIUL is not:
- A legally binding license system
- A substitute for institutional policies on academic integrity
- Legal advice regarding AI usage or intellectual property
- A comprehensive solution to all questions of AI integration in education
Use and Implementation
The implementation of AIUL tags in course materials is at the discretion of individual faculty members and educational institutions. Any enforcement of policies related to AI usage is subject to the existing academic integrity frameworks of the implementing institution.
By using AIUL tags and resources, you acknowledge that:
- The AIUL Project developers are not responsible for how these resources are implemented
- The effectiveness of these tags depends on clear communication and consistent application
- These resources should be adapted to fit the specific context of your course or program
- These materials do not create a legal relationship between the AIUL Project and users
No Legal Services
The AIUL Project team is not a law firm and does not provide legal services. Distributing, displaying, or linking to AIUL tags or the explanations that accompany them does not create an attorney-client or any other legal relationship.
Faculty members and institutions should consult with their own legal counsel regarding policies related to AI usage, academic integrity, and intellectual property in educational contexts.
